Some Thoughts on Today's Democratic Candidate Logos

Candidate logos are important vehicles to communicate images and overall messages. This was evident in the 2008 logo for Barack Obama, with its innovative, emotional design and message: The Blue "O" stood for the candidate; the red stripes symbolized the flag and patriotism; the red-and-white stripes further represented farmland, identifying the Illinois senator with the "heartland" of America; the white center of the "O," rising over the horizon of the stripes, appeared to be a sunrise, denoting “a better tomorrow."

Fast forward to the present campaign to win the Democratic Party's presidential nomination: 

Kamala Harris's logo features bold, block white and-red letters on a purple background in one of her designs. It's colors send a patriotic, but slightly different message—perhaps symbolizing her gender or perhaps suggesting that she is a fresh, new kind of candidate.
